Tohkai Japanese:

A nice and simple restaurant decorated in Japanese-Chinese style, good for private meal. Tohkai provides both Japanese buffet and a la carte menu in a small price. What we recommend are Teppanyaki of US steak, Japanese Bento, Assorted Sushi, TaikoRoll Maki, Norwegian Prawn, and New Zealand Mussel. For desserts, try Coffee Ice Cream with Jelly and Ice Red Bean

Hed Hongtae:

The menu devotes two pages to mushrooms, most of which are imported from China.

There are five variations of mushroom hot pots to choose from, ranging in price from Bt259 to Bt899. Hot-pot sets include a simmering pot of soup, which contains 20 different kinds of Thai and Chinese herbs and takes eight hours to prepare. The soup has a fresh, earthy flavour.

Also try the Poiy Sien tea (Bt25), the restaurant’s signature drink. The herbal tea is a mixture of liquorice, rose, medlar, chrysanthemum, mint, date and tangerine. It tastes a bit sweet.

After you slurp up the soup, servers bring out the mushrooms – 11 different kinds with the Bt599 hot pot. Before boiling the fungi in the soup pot, the server explains the health benefits of each. You even learn that while mushrooms can’t get you a date, some can improve sexual abilities.

An alarm clock set for six minutes provides the countdown to when the mushrooms are ready to eat. In the meantime, customers can toss in additional herbs of their choosing and watch the ingredients stew.

You can eat the mushrooms in soup form with the broth from the pot, or strain them and dip them in a spicy sauce or soy sauce. If you’re not too health conscious, the

deep-fried straw mushrooms (Bt79) provide a welcome but not excessive dose of grease.

The menu also offers many tasty non-mushroom Chinese dishes. Dim sum (Bt29-Bt32 an item) features delicious tri-colour shrimp dumplings and steamed pork wontons. There is also a wide variety of meat and vegetable

stir-fries, noodles and a succulent roasted duck (Bt95).

Yet the menu undeniably revolves around mushrooms. They are even used in the desserts, including mushroom ice-cream.
